Tinha perdido o rasto do realizador Tony Kaye depois do American History X, que é um dos meus filmes preferidos.

Este Detachment é diferente, bastante mais experimental e introspetivo, mas também explosivo, a espaços. O filme retrata um período escolar de um professor substituto numa escola complicada. Dito assim soa muito a cliché à la Dangerous Minds, mas o mote para o tom empregue à narrativa é dado por uma citação de Albert Camus que surge no início:

“And never have I felt so deeply at one
and the same time so detached from myself
and so present in the world.”

Até à data o protagonista (Adrien Brody em clássico e eficaz modo tristonho) não tinha grandes pretensões de mudar o mundo ou salvar os seus alunos, simplesmente cumprindo os serviços mínimos e seguindo a sua vida, de forma completamente desapaixonada, mas um conjunto de acontecimentos e convivências mudam um bocado essa orientação.

A visualização destes acontecimentos tanto vai sendo apresentada de forma natural quanto sendo dissecada pela personagem numa espécie de entrevistas em voz off, numa série de divagações sobre a educação e a condição humana em geral. Por vezes pertinente, mas no global, carecendo de maior foco.

Não é uma grande obra mas é, no mínimo, original e interessante, cheia de momentos intensos.

I lost track of director Tony Kaye since American History X, which is one of my favorite movies.

This Detachment its different, a lot more experimental and introspective, but somehow explosive, from time to time. The film shows us a school semester from a substitute teacher in a rough school. It may sound like a Dangerous Minds a-like cliche  but this Albert Camus quote set the tone right from the beginning:

“And never have I felt so deeply at one
and the same time so detached from myself
and so present in the world.”

Till the date the lead character (Adrien Brody in classic and effective sad-mode) wasn’t pretending to change the world or save his students. He would just do his job and carry on with his life, in a completely dispassionate (detached) way. But, as it should be, suddenly a series of events led him to change this attitude.

These events are shown either in a natural way or being narrated by the character in some sort of interviews, with a lot of wanderings about the education and the human condition, in general. Sometimes these ramblings are very relevant and effective, but in general I think they could be more focused

Not a great picture but, at least, a very interesting and original one, full of intense moments.
